Why I Write Memoirs

Writing my memoirs has proven quite a soul-cleansing experience. Today, I feel completely liberated and free. I have reclaimed myself and own my Soul. I can look the bull in the mouth and still stand my ground. I am me, the person God made me to be! Nothing holds me back, and nothing blocks my way. I have learned the great lessons of life and can only go forward, never backward.

 

Memoirs, when written without fear, truthfully, and without holding anything back, can offer a cleansing experience. After reading Pregnant Future, my daughter said to me, “Mom, you now look human.”

“Why’s that?” I asked.

“I always saw you as that perfect, never-do-wrong type of person. If I had known all this when I went through my growing up pains, I would have acted differently.”

“You think?” I smiled.

This is because I believe that each person must go through their growing up pains to truly grow up. I didn’t tell her that, but it is the truth. The lessons of telling it all in a memoir show that no matter what one goes through in life, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.

    A moving post, Joy. We are all the end result of the choices that we make. I too found that writing my memoir was a Cathartic experience. I learned more about myself and what motivates my decision making process during the writing of my work, than any other time I can recall. I’m so looking forward to reading ‘Pregnant Future’.

    I can totally relate to the scene between you and your daughter. My students see me as perfect, and when I share some of my life lessons, they act as if they are seeing me for the first time. My son also sees me as perfect, but I try to show him that I am just as human as he, and I, too, have made mistakes and learned from them. Thanks for sharing this post with us. 🙂

    Hi Joy, I can see your toughness. Good for you. I’ve been told many times ‘what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger’. Maybe that’s why I’m so tough. There is no guarantee that life is easy, fair, long, fun… Life is what you make it regardless of the cards you’re dealt. I love it when I see strength in other people. Stephanie Collins comes to mind also. I read With Angel’s Wings and will get around to reading your book as well. Tough women intrigue me. I would bet money there are a lot of strong people, men and women alike, amongst our group of #RRBC authors. Great website; great Party; great people. Party on, Joy!
