About the Author
SHIRLEY Harris-SLAUGHTER
I started out trying to write a decent enough manuscript but it was clear that my thoughts and memories were so scattered and so fragmented that it was almost next to impossible to write it all down so that it made sense. First mistake I made was in not documenting each occurrence as it happened. As a result a lot of situations were completely and utterly forgotten—until I was done and the book went to press; then the memories started flooding in. Obviously some of it was too traumatic and so I blocked it all out. I couldn’t believe that I had forgotten so much.
There was the stalker boyfriend who followed my every move and tried to isolate me from my family. I was divorced and trying to raise my son as a single parent. It had gotten so bad that it spilled over into the workplace. My girlfriends at work herded me through a side exit when they spotted him sitting in front of the building. I was mortified and scared.
And that’s as far as I’m going with that one. But it appears to be the start of another book doesn’t it?
I can’t believe where all the years have gone. You know how you hear the old folks say that no matter how old they are, they don’t feel it and are shocked when they look in the mirror. Well age has been kind to me because I look good compared to some of my friends. I forget how old I am until I look at them. I am very thankful for my health and wellness after all I’ve been through. Looking well is just a side bonus.
BOOK EXCERPT:
I’m a healthy, happy, confident woman who just happens to be in what I consider the prime of my life – the sunny side of 70. Yes, you’re reading this correctly, I am in my late 60’s and proud. In fact, I feel vibrant! But it wasn’t always that way.
I used to have episodes of depression punctuated by panic attacks. I’d get myself back together only to encounter another challenge. Everything began to spiral completely out of control around 1991 when my mother passed away. That was the most traumatic period of my life. I watched her go through surgery for cancer and then, five years later, go into a relapse. The doctors didn’t have any answers for us. From my experience, they just did what doctors usually do — treat the patient with chemo without discussing viable solutions, or preventative measures for the future.
I took care of my mother from the beginning, when she first got the diagnosis, to the end when she lay dying in her bedroom, down the hall from where I slept. The stress of her ordeal took its toll on me, but I didn’t actually get seriously ill until it was all over.
We got the bill from the hospital and it added up to about $200,000; and for what? It would take a rocket scientist to understand the charges on that long statement. It was just too complicated.
I said to myself, “There has got to be a better way and I’m going to find it!”
I had no idea at the time, what was lying in wait for me, lurking around the corner, waiting to grab hold and take me on a long, horrible ride…

Michelle, the stress of caring for my mother really contributed to my failing health. Losing my mother was beyond words I can express here but I know you understand if you’ve been through it. Thank you so much for your kind words and support.

Hello everybody and Joy thank you so much for having me on your blog. You are a joy – no pun intended. lol. I got a phone call from my nephew who doesn’t normally call. He wanted me to know how much he was enjoying the book and just got up to chapter 2. He did not know all that I had gone through (as if I would tell him). This book never would have seen the light of day had it not been for Ms. Nonnie Jules coaxing and pushing me to do it. I cannot tell you the support and positive reaction I have gotten from just writing something like this. Its a much needed piece of information.

Hi Shirley. Another great post about what must be a very intriguing book. We have some things in common, cuz I had a stalker ex boyfriend too. Aren’t they just tons of fun? 😃 I hope you have a great time on your tour and I will pop in as often as I can. Joy, thank you for hosting. I always enjoy stopping by your blog.

Rhani I cannot tell you how much nerve it took for me to write my story. I blocked some of that experience out of my memory. Its amazing what you can do to protect yourself.
