The RWISA Revolution Blog Tour challenged its authors to write with this year’s theme in mind: A New Year – A Fresh Start. Immediately, I thought of a cocoon. A caterpillar’s transformation into a butterfly is not an easy one. This past year has not been easy for any of us. Even though I’m used to being home most of the time, being isolated and fearful of getting COVID (or worse, giving it to someone I love) has crippled me at times. I spent this year working on my inner self. I took meditation courses and worked with my therapist to manage my anxiety better. I’m a constant work in progress, but I feel stronger and healthier today than I was a year ago. For that, I am grateful. RWISA (Rave Writers – International Society of Authors) asked us to ponder a few questions, so here are my thoughts.

What are your plans for the new year?

This year, I plan to continue being careful and cautious when out and about. I will continue to strengthen my physical, emotional, and mental well-being. I will nurture the friendships that held firm despite the distancing. I will continue to create memorable moments with my family. Without them, this year would have been much more difficult.

What are your goals?

I had hoped to write an entire novel during COVID since I was home so much, but my muse locked herself in her own cocoon and refused to cooperate. She, too, has burst through and has begun to share her mojo with me. With the help of my RWISA critique group, I am going through my final edits for a new novel. It’s a young adult novel with no connection to my current series. I will publish it at some point this year.

I am also writing Drake’s story once again. For those who have read myChronicles of the Diasodz series, you know I’ve been working on this for a few years. He and I have had a bit of a difficult time in telling his story, but we are finding our way through. My goal is to finish writing his story this year. Then, I’ll use next year to revise and edit it before sending it out into the world for everyone to enjoy.

What will you do to contribute to the betterment of our society?

I believe in the energies of the world, and I choose to spread kindness, love, and laughter as often as possible. As a teacher at a middle school, I empower my students to be confident in their abilities and challenge them to be positive and productive members of their communities. I also post inspirational quotes on my Instagram. I have a separate Instagram that focuses on being proud of the beauty within. It’s been dormant for a bit, but I’m hoping to get it restarted. We need more positivity in the world, and that’s my little contribution.

How will you succeed in the midst and in spite of COVID-19?

One needs to define success in order to answer this question. For me, success is a day when I stay present in the moment. It presents itself as a moment where I notice my anxiety and allow it to flow down my mind’s river of worry without me. It’s when I make a student feel accepted and cared for or when my son sits with me at night to watch a show together.

I do not measure success by money earned or by a title. Instead, I measure success by the impact my choices have on those around me and on myself. As we continue to deal with COVID-19, any day where those whom I love are alive and well is a successful day for me. This year, I celebrate the little things because those are what matter most.

COVID, WRITING, AND ME:  A FREELANCER’S TALE

John and I lived in a retirement community in the heart of the city. We chose the community for its closeness to Mayo Clinic and its many support services. Though we lived here for more than a year, we felt like we were living in a motel. Several months ago, John and I felt so badly we thought we had Covid-19. I called 911 and we took “his” and “her” ambulances to the ED (Emergency Department).

Both of us were tested for Covid-19 and the results were negative. As it turned out, John had advanced prostate cancer. I had cellulitis, a bacterial infection that can be fatal, and was treated with antibiotics. After six days in the hospital, I was dismissed. John stayed a few more days.

Because I had been in the hospital, the retirement community quarantined me for two weeks. It was a serious quarantine. I had to set trash and laundry outside the front door for pick-up. Whenever someone came to the door, I had to wear a mask and practice social distancing. The retirement community didn’t allow visitors and we felt isolated and alone.

“Staying in my apartment is driving me crazy,” a neighbor shared. She wondered if I was going crazy too.

“I’m writing like crazy,” I answered. Because I’ve been a freelancer for 40 years, I was used to working at home. However, being John’s caregiver took up most of the day. But I am a disciplined writer and sheltering at home sparked my creativeness. In fact, I wrote five children’s books.

Covid-19 has increased the need for grief resources. This made me think about how children grieve. For example, teens may turn to peers for comfort rather than their parents. The more I thought about children’s grief, the more concerned I became. With a BS in early childhood education and an MA in art education, I could be of help.

I wrote two books … a workbook for grieving kids ages 5-8 and a workbook for grieving kids ages 9-12. I contacted a grief publisher I had worked with previously and both books were accepted.

My co-author and I finished a leadership book, Ready, Set, Lead! Leadership can be learned, and we think it begins in early childhood. Our picture book is a rhyming poem. The first half defines leadership, and the second half tells kids how to become leaders. We also wrote a companion art activity book.

Weeks passed. I spent more time on caregiving than writing. I knew I had to practice self-care to survive. The grief workbooks are illustrated with doodle art. Though I have a graduate degree in art, I never heard of this art form. What was it? I researched doodle art online and started doodling. To my surprise, I discovered that doodling provided respites from stress.

If doodling helped me, it could help others.

I started writing a book for teens, Grief Doodling: Bringing Back Your Smiles.When I was writing I was almost in a trance. Grieving kids don’t need tomes, they need concise resources. Grief Doodling is the first book I have written and illustrated. My current publisher accepted the book and I contacted influencers—experts who might write reviews. Eight experts responded and their positive words are on the back cover.  

Late in November of 2020 I realized John was dying. He knew it and I knew it. Since John was paraplegic and needed more care than I could provide, he was moved to short-term rehab. After two staff members tested positive for Covid-19, John and I were re-tested. John tested negative. I tested positive and was quarantined again. Thankfully, I never developed any symptoms.

At a time when I wanted to see John more, I saw him less. I didn’t see him for a month. Though we stayed in touch by phone, calls weren’t the same as seeing each other face-to-face. John called several times (which was difficult for him) to say “I love you.” Three days after my quarantine was up, John died. I posted a notice of his death on Facebook.

Nonnie Jules let RRBC and RWISA members know about John’s death and many contributed funds for sympathy gifts. The gifts just kept coming—a food basket, cozy blanket, comfort stones, blessing cards for women, musical jewelry box, and more. Every gift sparked tears. I wasn’t alone. RRBC members had my back and were family.  I am grateful for their kindness and support.

Life had another surprise for me. Three months before the release date, Grief Doodling received a first place award in the self-help category. I was thrilled and am still thrilled. I had a book trailer made for the book and posted it on Facebook. Advance sales are going well, and I hope the book trailer generates more sales.

One of the reasons I write is to figure things out. I researched end of life care and took notes about the tasks I had to complete before John died. I am hard at work on another book.  The purpose of the book is to help spouses and significant others understand the present and believe in a future.

The pandemic is hellish and tragic. All of us know someone who tested positive, gotten the virus, or died. Yet if we look carefully, we can find grace in sorrow. I was able to see the blessings in my life—one-on-one time with John, understanding that every life is a miracle, and writing five children’s books. At age 85 I’m still working part-time, giving Zoom talks and workshops, competing in the book business, and setting goals.

John was amazed at my writing output and often joked, “While you’re up, write me a book.” I love to write and working on a new book gives purpose to my days. I think John would be pleased and proud.

Music as Inspiration for Writing

Book Summary:

In CADENZA, the final book of “The Music We Made” series, the young tenor Brian Martin finds himself on the cusp of superstardom and marriage, until he is compelled to leave behind his distinguished musical family, and his fiancé, in London, to visit the U.S. to see where his famous late grandmother, Maggie Crawford, the only other opera singer in the family, grew up. His journey takes him to Marshall, Minnesota, and Maggie’s hometown high school, where he meets the music teacher, Laura Jones, who helps him with his family history in more ways than he could have imagined.

It’s an honor to write this guest post — and to be RRBC’s Spotlight Author for February!

Music inspired me to write “The Music We Made” series – made up of the books Bravura, Appassionato and the newly-released Cadenza. They were inspired by my experience as a violinist, my love of music instilled in me by my parents from a young age, and my desire to write something that was a love letter to music and musicians so that others could peek into their fascinating world.

There were three main ways music played a large role in writing Cadenza and the entire series:

1. Music is a character in the overall story. Music occupies the heart and soul of most of the main characters – they are professional instrumental musicians, singers, composers, conductors, advocates, or teachers. As a result, specific pieces figure into the story as well – that they audition with, or perform, create, or teach to others. Each book has a list of pieces at the end that played a role in the book, in case readers want to explore the music on their own.

2. My research explored the great musicians of the 20th century. In getting approved to conduct research at the British Library in London in the mid-1990s, and again in the early 2000s, I was able to pour over concert posters, flyers, programs and recordings of the 1950s to the present, specifically as they related to the characters, opera houses, clubs, concert halls, orchestras and festivals I wanted to portray in the books. In addition, I loosely based the Royal School of Music on an existing music school in London and was thrilled to research it when I was there as well.

3. I listened to music as I wrote it. This was two-fold: when writing those scenes that involved a character performing a piece, I would play that piece in the background while writing. Or when there was a scene that created a certain mood but did not directly involve music, I would select other pieces to play that captured the same mood, while I wrote. Many people love to listen to music to get writing ideas, and my process definitely benefitted from this practice.

I encourage you to incorporate music into your writing routine and forms of inspiration, no matter what your subject matter. Onward!

Author Bio

Lisa Kirazian writes fiction, plays, screenplays, and also directs for stage and screen. Her writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Performing Arts Magazine, San Diego Union Tribune and many other publications. She is in demand as a speaker and has been a guest on KPBS Public Radio and at various conferences. Lisa is a graduate of Stanford University.

Several of her screenplays have placed in major competitions and festivals. Twelve of her stage plays have been produced across the U.S. and have won numerous awards, including a few publications. She also directed and wrote the adapted screenplay of the short film, “Reflection Day.”

Her novels include BRAVURA, APPASSIONATO, and now CADENZA, the three books of “The Music We Made” series, following three generations in the Driscoll family of musicians and inspired by her experience as a violinist. The series is also being developed for television. 

Lisa lives in San Diego with her husband and two daughters and is involved in the Armenian community locally, nationally and abroad.

In March 2019, my sister (who lives in Canada), visited me in New Zealand, and we embarked on a memory tour. We revisited places from our childhood, including Queenstown, where our grandmother used to live. 

Our great-grandfather had been an engineer on the iconic century-old coal fired steamship, the TSS Earnslaw, back in the day when it transported stock and supplies across Lake Wakatipu. We enjoyed a delightful sunny cruise to Walter Peak High Country Farm.

During our travels, we set a challenge, to each write a 1500 word story. I chose to write a Children’s Christmas story, based on a writing prompt from my Aspiring Author Series, and that’s how, ‘Sleighed’, came to be created.

Breakfield and Burkey wanted to share the research requirements of the Enigma Series. 

Our day jobs require we stay abreast of current technology trends. This gives us the ideas or focus for a given book. We perform additional research for specific details we weave into a story, to verify the capabilities. Then we weave the storyline around real technology that is available, while allowing the right characters to use that knowledge. In our stories the Heroes and Villains are technologically savvy, so it often becomes like a chess game of who finds the next play or block first.

For example, in the latest story, The Enigma Threat, we spent a good deal of time research abandoned satellites still orbiting the earth. The general assumption is that once the satellites duty cycle was completed, it would simply route into the atmosphere where it would burn up during reentry. As it turns out, there are numerous satellites still orbiting the earth, but not used or in some cases actively responding to communications. We had a field day with this revelation in the story, which you won’t want to miss.

We want to share a few of the juicy tidbits into The Enigma Threat. Research for us comes from collaboration with many people, insights of plans for upcoming offerings, and volumes of white papers. However, we also take comments from beta readers and reviewers to improve our stories. One of our beta readers offered some insight we refused to ignore. They stated, “I hate reading author’s stories that use the same formula for each book in the series. I want fresh and different, but something that makes me think.” 

Toward that end, we’ve had reviewers who have done several of the books in the series. One such reviewer stated, “These authors don’t fall into a familiar pattern for a story plot. If you think this will be the same as last time, you will be disappointed.” We like to have some twists to make people think about the possibilities. We like quoting Arthur C. Clarke’s Don’t give me more, give me better. Breakfield and Burkey heartily subscribe to this mantra.  

Our research is always turning up something new. Once upon a time business determined the direction of technology. That shifted, as Burkey often suggests, when the demands of users in our digital world shifted to optimizing experience of the individual first. All the devices we have at our fingertips highlight that with a myriad of applications, some safe, some questionable. 

This helps provide for a fresh new attack vector always ahead of the good guys. In cyber security the hackers and crackers are always ahead of the good guys. Many times, hackers take this route of breaking something as part of a challenge, or to say they could. Sometimes they look for the profits. Today the profitability is unbelievably high.  Each new Darknet threat comes as an unexpected guest who will not leave until counter measures are built. In our world, the fiction is real. We like our characters to bring readers into our Enigma Universe.

Sadly, people often don’t believe they are vulnerable until an event. Most people say, “I usually don’t think about security but when I do it’s always too late”. The events can be modest or overwhelming such as a data center gutted by cyber malware, their daughter calls crying that she needs $4,000 in cash or she is going to jail, or all the medical records of a hospital will be published on-line unless $250,000 in Bitcoin is transferred in the next 24 hours. Cyber extortion is alive and unfortunately well in today’s age of instant communications. With it comes instant infections. These viral infections are not just of computer operations but also the poisoning of people’s thinking with false information.

This is the research we do daily to build technically accurate problems that our heroes of the R-Group must remedy.  The frightening reality is the Darknet attack vectors are aimed at the individuals as much as companies. Our characters and our scenarios are built on people who have crossed our paths in truly vulnerable situations.

I was not born with a golden spoon in my mouth; it was made of white plastic. I was born in the ‘hood of Houston, Texas called the Fourth Ward. They would say, I was born into the drug life or the “hustling life. I knew God had a better plan for my life and I was determined to break the generational curses. My lifelong lesson has been to find my own identity in this sometimes crazy and very harsh world. It has been said that you are product of your environment. I am the struggle, and it is definitely real. There is also an old saying that the road to success is often paved by failure, as it is one of the most important steps. The obstacles I have faced in life have all been orchestrated by God.

Determined to break the curses in my family, I wanted my hustle to be positive and to inspire people to achieve their dreams. Wake-Pray-Hustle-Repeat—I would watch my mom repeat this every day after giving up the hustling life; working low-wage jobs, struggling to keep the lights on and food on the table.

…IN THE ORLD OF WE

We often hear that music is the universal language.  It is the avenue to bridge all divides – 

racial divides

gender divides

political divides.    

But, in the midst of all the division, 

each party holding court in their respective corners of the ring, 

ears lightly tickled by the sound of the simple “IMAGINE” by John Lennon, 

wafting through the musky air of tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons –

a mist of standstill calms the noise

…and in mere moments, the eyes of “independent” onlookers are pleasantly greeted by the most beautiful and welcoming sight –

…bodies slowly rocking

…hands collectively raised

…waving side to side

…all in unison  

…chanting

 “Imagine there’s no heaven. It’s easy if you try…”

The 2020 US election has ended. The people have spoken. 

What’s left behind?  A world of anxiety and angst – wrapped in feelings of wondering when the bombs will drop, or when the other shoe will fall.  And although I’d like to point fingers here and maybe even call a few not-so-pretty names, my daughter sits beside me as I write this, an ear to measure the “nice” level in my words, the child guiding the parent.  Roles reversed, she gently reminds me that the original goal of this message is unification – therefore, I will stay the course of peace.

In this moment, acknowledging that my conscience of decency is bigger than any emotion that might be stirring the embers of fires that have burned deep inside me for the past few years – neutrality is my cohort, and we will not take sides. 

Instead, all that will be allowed to roll off my tongue is FACT…

one reign is ending  

and another about to begin.

Some exultant…

others despondent

Yet, now is not the time for either.

Yesterday is gone, 

today almost a memory, 

but what awaits us in tomorrow 

is what WE decide it will be.  

This is not the land of us and them – 

this is the world of WE.  

WE decide what, who and how WE want to be.  

Do you resemble love, or, are you wearing the likeness of hate?  

What adorns your heart, a choice only you can make … for you. 

So, I have made my choice – and it is firm and true!

I choose love. 

To love,

to be loved,

to speak love,

to exude love,

to live love. 

Because I know that what I send out into the world, will be exactly what the world returns to my doorstep.

It is for that reason that I shall…

remain steadfast in my vigilance –

cognizant of any negativity that might try to seep in or out of my pores –

Skillfully suppressing the desire to gloat in the face of the so-called “losing” side.  

I’ve too much pride…to stoop so low.

The 2020 US election has ended.  The people have spoken.

There were no losers. 

WE are a world of winners.

Remember, WE decide

what

who

and how

WE will be

in this…

beautiful

colorful

everchanging

world of WE. 

“Imagine there’s no country
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace…

It’s all easy if WE try.”
